The following are GENERAL rule so floorball. We do not delve deep into all the penalty options for brevity reasons. Suffice to say that some of the rules below would result in a penalty (i.e. making contact with the ball above a players waist, grabbing the ball with your hand etc.). As teams become more competitive and players more skilled at floorball, penalties would be introduced however, for the most part a LOSS Of POSSESSION is generally the referee call in RECREATIONAL floorball. (Rules a similar to that of soccer as floorball was derived from an outdoor frozen soccer field in late 1970s)
RULES OF PLAY
The game is played with 3 to 5 field players and a goalie depending on the court size and level of play. Number of players is adjusted such that there is ample space between players on the court (mimic a soccer field layout). When games are play without goalies (small gym and/or lower age/ ability) modifications MAY be made such that the players will be restricted from being able to score close to the mini net (i.e. basketball key MAY serve as a no score zone- but players can still play within the key). This is such to make it slightly more challenging for players and to avoid a pile up and stick slashing at the mini nets.
Teams consist of a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 20 players
Game is played with running time 3 periods of 15 min (adjusted for gym time and age/ ability)
The goalie must not hold the ball for more than 5 seconds and when throwing the ball, it must hit the floor before crossing over the centre line and into the opponents half of the court
Players are not permitted to contact the shaft of an opponents stick when they have controlled* possession of the ball. Contact must be with the ball first
Players are not permitted to contact the blade of an opponents stick when they have controlled* possession unless contact is made with the ball first
Players cannot lift, hack or slash an opponents stick during the controlled* possessions of the ball or when there is an attempt to gain control of the ball
(* controlled possession means the player is stickhandling the ball with control as opposed to attempting to battle for the ball or juggle the ball to get control)
Players cannot put their stick or leg in between the opponents legs when playing for the ball
If the ball goes out of the rink/playing area, the team that did not shoot the ball out of play gets possession and continues the play by placing the ball 1 metre away from where the ball went out (i.e. Free Hit). If the ball goes out behind the goal, the team that did not shoot the ball out gets possession and continues the play from the corner spot (Hit In).
When given a free shot (Free Hit or Hit In) the opponent must be at least 3 metres away from the ball including their sticks. The team with possession has 3 seconds to hit the ball once it is placed at the appropriate sport on the court (they cannot drag the ball during this free shot. It has to be a solid hit of the ball from where the ball has been placed)
The ball may be kicked, but not more than one consecutive time and is required to make contact with a stick before being kicked again. Goals cannot be scored on a kicked ball
The ball must not be played with the hands or head
The ball may be played from the air if it is below knee level
(below waist in some games depending on the skill level)
No form of pushing, checking or physically tackling the body is allowed
Players may not play without a stick (if they drop their stick during play they have to leave the court or retrieve their stick before returning to play)
You are not allowed to jump and play ball at the same time (i.e. jump up to stop the ball with your body then immediately play it afterwards)
The ball may not be played if a hand or both knees are on the ground (one knee is allowed) or the player is lying down on the court
Free shot or 2 minute penalty is given when:
